Research & Methodology
Mercury 91 is not a research institution. It is one person's app, designed by reading the research and building accordingly. Here is that research, and what each paper actually changed.
Who builds Mercury 91?
Mercury 91 is built and maintained by Rae, a solo developer in Melbourne, Australia. One person writes the code, the 3D universe, the shaders, and the support replies. There is no research team and no clinical staff — the research below informed the design decisions, and that is the extent of the claim.
More on the why: the founder's story and the mission.
Research that informed the build
Peer-reviewed work in sleep science and dream research that shaped specific product decisions. Every paper links to its DOI so you can read the source rather than take this page's word for it.
Dream recall
Recall drops sharply within minutes of waking. This is why capture speed, not entry length, is the thing Mercury 91 optimises for.
Schredl, M., & Reinhard, I. (2008)
Journal of Sleep Research
Shaped the one-tap voice capture on /dream-logging.
Aspy, D. J., et al. (2017)
Dreaming
Why the product nudges consistency over entry length.
Lucid dreaming
Induction techniques depend on reliable reality-checking and on reviewing your own dream signs over time -- both are archive features, not single-entry features.
Stumbrys, T., et al. (2012)
Consciousness and Cognition
Informed tagging and recurring-sign detection.
Spoormaker, V. I., & van den Bout, J. (2006)
Dreaming
Why recurring dreams are surfaced separately.
Patterns and creativity
The value of a dream journal shows up across months, not in one entry. That is the argument for search, tags, and pattern surfacing.
Cartwright, R. D. (2010)
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology
Informed the emotional-arc view in dream analysis.
Barrett, D. (1993)
Dreaming
Why dream entries link to the creative tools.
How the research shows up in the product
Capture speed
Text, voice, or a photo in one tap on /dream-logging, because recall degrades within minutes of waking.
Dream loggingConsistency over length
Short entries are treated as complete entries. There is no minimum, no streak-shaming, no empty-state guilt.
Dream journalingPatterns across the archive
Symbols, emotions, and recurring themes are surfaced across entries rather than interpreted one dream at a time.
AI dream analysisWind-down before sleep
Meditation and low-stimulation universe activities sit alongside the journal, because what happens before sleep affects what you can recall after it.
Sleep aidWhat Mercury 91 is not
- Not a medical device or treatment. Mercury 91 does not diagnose, treat, or cure anything, including insomnia, nightmares, or any sleep disorder. If sleep is affecting your health, talk to a doctor.
- Not affiliated with the cited institutions. The journals and papers above are referenced as published research. No endorsement, partnership, membership, or accreditation is claimed or implied.
- Not clinical dream interpretation. AI analysis surfaces patterns across your own entries. It is reflective, not diagnostic, and it is not a substitute for a therapist.
- Not a research team. One person builds this. Where the product goes beyond what the research supports, that is a design choice, not a finding.
