The Windy Blue Giant
Journey to Neptune, the most distant planet from the Sun. Discovered by mathematics before it was ever seen, this deep blue ice giant whips up the fastest winds in the solar system and shepherds the icy worlds of the Kuiper Belt beyond.
Neptune's supersonic winds reach 2,100 km/h, the fastest in the solar system, despite receiving little solar energy.
Neptune was predicted mathematically from irregularities in Uranus's orbit and found within 1° of the prediction in 1846.
Neptune's largest moon Triton orbits backwards, a captured Kuiper Belt object with active nitrogen geysers.
Methane and an unknown atmospheric component give Neptune a deeper, more vivid blue than Uranus.
Neptune takes 164.8 Earth years to orbit the Sun. It has completed just one full orbit since its discovery.
Neptune radiates 2.6 times more energy than it receives from the Sun, an internal heat source that powers its wild weather.
Named for Neptune, god of the sea, inspired by the planet's deep ocean-blue color.
Symbolism. The sea, storms, depths
Known as Poseidon, earth-shaker and ruler of the oceans, brother of Zeus and Hades.
Symbolism. Oceans, earthquakes, horses
Discovered in 1846 through the mathematics of Urbain Le Verrier, Neptune symbolizes the triumph of scientific prediction.
Symbolism. Mathematics, prediction, the unseen
Astrologers associate Neptune with dreams, illusion, and the dissolution of boundaries, themes of the unseen depths.
Symbolism. Dreams, mysticism, imagination
Neptune reaches opposition each year. At magnitude 7.8 it is never visible to the naked eye, so plan around dark, moonless nights.
Binoculars show Neptune as a faint star. A telescope at 150x or more reveals a tiny, distinctly blue disk.
Use an astronomy app or finder chart; Neptune moves so slowly that it spends about 14 years in each zodiac constellation.
Spotting Neptune connects you to history: Galileo unknowingly sketched it as a star in 1612, over two centuries before its official discovery.
In astrology, Neptune rules dreams, intuition, and transcendence. It dissolves boundaries between self and cosmos, governing imagination, spirituality, and the mystical experiences that defy explanation.
The wellspring of creativity, fantasy, and the dream world
Psychic sensitivity and spiritual connection
Dissolving the ego and merging with something greater
Neptune is the only planet discovered by mathematical prediction. Urbain Le Verrier calculated its position from irregularities in Uranus's orbit, and Johann Galle found it within 1 degree of the prediction on the very first night of searching in September 1846.
Neptune's winds reach 2,100 km/h, likely powered by the planet's internal heat source combined with very low atmospheric friction. Neptune radiates 2.6 times more energy than it receives from the distant Sun.
Yes. Since Pluto's reclassification as a dwarf planet in 2006, Neptune is the eighth and most distant planet from the Sun, orbiting at about 4.5 billion kilometers. Beyond it lies the Kuiper Belt of icy dwarf worlds.
Triton orbits Neptune backwards, the only large moon in the solar system to do so, which means it was likely captured from the Kuiper Belt. Despite being one of the coldest places known at -235°C, it has active nitrogen geysers and a young, geologically refreshed surface.
